Explain what will happen
For children, a simple explanation of the day can be more useful than a long countdown. Let them choose a small bag of familiar things to keep with them. Label their room clearly at the new property and make bedding and favourite belongings easy to find.
Keep loading routes separate
Doors may be open and heavy objects will be moving through the property. Arrange a safe space or another trusted adult to look after children and pets away from the loading area. Tell the crew where they are and avoid asking anyone carrying furniture to manage them at the same time.
Plan travel and essentials
Keep food, water, familiar bedding and routine supplies accessible for pets, and make appropriate transport arrangements. If an animal has particular needs, get advice from its vet in advance. Keep children’s clothes, snacks, medicines and bedtime essentials outside the main load.
Settle one space first
You do not need to unpack the entire house on the first evening. Set up a calm sleeping area and the everyday essentials. Check doors, gates and unfamiliar spaces before allowing pets to explore. A little continuity in routine can help everyone settle into the new surroundings.
